His Majesty’s Theatre

This is a live entertainment venue listed on the State Heritage Register. The building has three levels.

Ticketing: You should discuss ticketing requirements with the box office when purchasing tickets as a variety of seating locations and options are available to meet the specific needs or type of equipment used by individuals.

Public Transport: The closest CAT is Red stop number 18 on Hay Street.

Universal drop off bay: There are two set-down areas at the front entrance suitable for cars, taxis, maxi-taxis and small buses.

Accessible parking: His Majesty’s Car Park is diagonally opposite to the theatre and has six accessible bays on the Murray Street entrance level. Access is then by lift and wide level paths.

Main entrance: Level entrance through the main entrance, double doors are held open during performances. At other times doors must be opened manually, the single swing door is heavy with a narrow opening (one leaf is 670mm).

Foyer: There is room for all types of wheelchairs to move through the foyer.

Box Office: This has a separate entrance off Hay Street, however it is possible to enter from the foyer when the main entrance is open. The box office door off Hay Street has a short steep ramp with no landing at the top leading to the swing door which is wide and heavy. The counter is at standing height.

Signage: No directional signs to the toilet or lifts, and available signage styles vary.

Lift: The lift to upper levels, including the dress circle bar, used for lunch-time concerts, is located in the main foyer. The lift door is 950mm wide and the car is 1460mm x1500mm. There is direction of travel information both externally and internally, no audible announcement is available. External buttons are 1400mm high and internal buttons are 1100mm to 1500mm high.

Audio Loop: For those using a ‘T’ switch an audio loop is available in the stalls from row G back and in the Dress and Upper Circle from row B back. Those using other types of technology should discuss with the box office as the effectiveness will vary depending on the seating position in relation to the loop.

Wheelchair access to theatre seating: Please discuss with the box office or venue, as a variety of options are available. All wheelchair seating is on the ground floor through the main thoroughfare or alternatively, by prior arrangement enter off King Street to wheelchair spaces at the front of the theatre.

Wheelchair seating space: Generally spaces are available at the rear stalls and other spaces at the ends of rows at the front of the stalls. It is important to discuss your seating needs when booking tickets as numerous options are available and the staff will endeavour to meet your specific requirements, for example some seats have removable armrests to allow transfer.

Seating: These are medium backed, have high seats and armrests.

Accessible toilets: Accessible toilets are within the male and female toilets on the ground floor. Access is down a wide corridor and through the main toilet door which is level, and has a heavy wide door that is slow to close. The D handle is 1250mm high.
There is space for all types of wheelchairs to move down the corridor and through the toilet areas.

Backstage:

This venue has accommodated artists who use wheelchairs. There is a small ramp to the stage door and level access is available in all essential areas.

Down stairs at the Maj

This is open for evening performances. Direct access is via a steep set of stairs off Hay Street or a lift.

Wheelchair access: Access for those unable to use the steps in this heritage building is via a restricted use lift located behind the main stairs in the foyer. This lift is not for general public use and patrons are required to be accompanied by a staff member. During performances the foyer will be open and a staff member is available to assist. When booking it is advisable to indicate that you are unable to access the theatre via the steps.
The lift is 1000mm wide and 1500mm deep and controls will be operated by a staff member.

Counter and bars: Standing height.

Seating: Due to intimate nature of the small theatre, the accessible toilet location and safety requirements, patrons with mobility impairments will be seated in locations close to the exit and lift.

Accessible toilets: The front-of-house manager will be available to provide lift access to the accessible toilets in the main theatre.

The Museum of Performing Arts

This is a small museum off the foyer from ‘Down Stairs at the Maj’ which has the same access arrangements. Open for the same hours as the foyer.

Displays: There is level access throughout the museum with space for people in smaller and medium size wheelchairs to move around the displays. Display styles vary and generally allow for easy viewing. T style displays are set at 900mm high and are very wide.
