Message from the Lord Mayor of the City of Perth
On Saturday, January 26, all Western Australians are invited to gather on the Perth Water foreshore to show our pride on Australia Day.
The City of Perth, Lotterywest, Channel Seven and MIX 94.5 are proud to present Lotterywest Australia Day Skyworks 2008, the biggest Australia Day community celebration in the country.
This is a special annual event for us here in the City because of the incredible sense of community and patriotism it inspires across all generations in the people of Perth. An estimated 400,000 people head to vantage points, be they their favourite regular spots or new ones each year, around the Swan River to watch the skies light up to a custom designed MIX 94.5 soundtrack exploring Australia’s diversity and saluting the many great artists and cultures that call Australia home.
In 2008 we are pleased to work with the world-renowned Howard and Sons Pyrotechnics team. Howard and Sons have designed and produced unique and inspiring displays such as the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Shanghai Fireworks Festival and the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Opening and Closing celebrations.
While this will undoubtedly provide the ‘high lights’ of the evening, the Lotterywest Australia Day Skyworks is much more than fireworks. It is about our culture and celebrating being Australian.
The theme for the 2008 Lotterywest Skyworks is Cultural Diversity, so I will be particularly honoured to be the first to officially welcome new Australians to the celebration at a special Citizenship Ceremony held at Council House on that morning.
The Australia Day program offers a fantastic range of community events for everyone to enjoy, with Air and Water shows, live music, sporting events and indigenous culture.
The City of Perth is proud to join with our consortium partners Lotterywest, Channel 7 and Mix 94.5 to showcase a spectacular day of national celebrations for the people of Perth.
The Right Honourable the
Lord Mayor
Lisa Scaffidi
