Message from the Lord Mayor of the City of Perth

Each year the City of Perth presents the nation’s biggest and most diverse celebration of our national day, climaxing with the spectacular Lotterywest Australia Day Skyworks over the Swan River.

There is a growing sense of excitement as this year’s Lotterywest Australia Day Community Celebration offers even more activities to keep the family entertained during the day.

Our newest Australians will be welcomed at a Citizenship Ceremony to be held at Council House in the morning. Then, during the day, there will be live bands performing on Langley Park, an Aboriginal concert on Supreme Court Gardens, an exciting air show and a water regatta.

This year there will be community group performances and activities on The Esplanade, where there will also be a family picnic area, complete with rides for the children.

2009 is a very special year for Lotterywest Australia Day Skyworks as it marks the 25th anniversary of the fireworks spectacular, an Australia Day event which Perth can truly call its own. It’s an event that many of you will have grown up with over the years.

I’m sure that all who have attended over the years will have some great personal memories of times spent by the river looking up at the visual extravaganza unfolding overhead.

There will be a silvery glow in the sky with a memorable program of pyrotechnics. The synchronised soundtrack will feature some of the greatest music from the past 25 years.

My Council colleagues and I invite you all to join us for the Lotterywest Australia Day Community Celebration as we all come together to express what it means to be an Australian.

The Right Honourable the Lord Mayor
Lisa Scaffidi
