Creative Industries
The creative industries are an important component within the City of Perth regional economy. They contribute to the net economic output of a wide range of sub-industries and create a vibrant and culturally diverse environment, which encourages creativity, individuality and entrepreneurism.
In 2008 the City of Perth, in partnership with the Department of Culture and the Arts; the Department of Industry and Resources and the Department of Premier and Cabinet, commissioned the report - Perth’s Creative Industries – An Analysis. The report analysed the state of Perth’s Creative Industries and has helped to identify the relative strengths and weaknesses of the sector.
This report showed that the creative industries play a key role in the West Australian economy. The report estimated that in 2006, creative industries contributed 3.4% of the economic output of all industries in Metropolitan Perth, providing $4.6 billion directly to the economy and an additional $6 billion through in-direct or flow on contributions. This represents a valuable contribution to the economy, suggesting that growth within the creative industries sector will create further growth in other complimentary sectors.
Furthermore, it was found that employment in the creative industries was exceptionally strong within Western Australia and in particular the metropolitan Perth region. It was found that between 1996 and 2001 the annual rate of employment growth in metropolitan Perth’s creative industries was 7.3%, with 90% of Western Australia’s creative industry employment contained in this region. This is compared with an average 1.8% growth of Western Australia’s total workforce in the same period and highlights the importance of this sector to the economy and its’ potential to drive rapid growth.
To support and further encourage the development of Perth's Creative Industries the City of Perth is in the process of developing a "Creative Industries Action Plan".
The City also recently held a successful networking function for creative industries participants, featuring iiNet founder and CEO, Michael Malone, and Australian Web Industry Association representative Myles Eftos, who is also the director of MadPilot Productions and co-founder of a collaborative development studio.
