New initiatives to keep Australia Day beautiful
15th Jan 2009
Coca-Cola Recycle and Reward
This Australia Day the City of Perth is pleased to welcome back the Coca-Cola Recycle and Reward Program.
On the back of the successful launch in 2008, this program will again aim to recycle the majority of the 40 tonnes of rubbish collected from the Swan River foreshore.
Skyworks revellers will receive colour coded rubbish bags from volunteers as they enter popular viewing spots and be encouraged to take all recyclable waste to the Coca-Cola Recycling Zones in exchange for a free temporary tattoo or the chance to win Coca-Cola branded items or an Australian flag.
In addition, clean up staff will roam throughout the day to clear rubbish from key areas making the experience safer and more pleasant for Western Australian families.
As public awareness about recycling continues to improve, so too does the clean up process. Last year the clean up was completed by 8.00am the next morning - a big improvement on the five days it has taken in years gone by.
The Coca-Cola Recycle and Reward Program is a City of Perth initiative in partnership with Coca-Cola, Keep Australia Beautiful and Lotterywest Australia Day Skyworks.
Carbon Conscious Corporate Boxes
For the first time, 2009 Skyworks has partnered with Carbon Conscious Ltd to make the corporate entertainment area a carbon conscious function.
Measuring emissions relating to elements such as travel, waste and energy, the City of Perth has worked with Carbon Conscious Ltd to determine the approximate carbon footprint of the area.
Sufficient Mallee Eucalypt trees will be planted in the Western Australian wheat belt to offset elements of the corporate entertainment area's carbon emissions.
These native trees will be planted on marginal land and will help reduce salinity and wind erosion on farms whilst contributing to the fight against climate change.
Keep Our Rivers Healthy
The natural beauty of the Swan River makes it the perfect place to watch the Australia Day celebrations, but remember: it's your river – please look after it.
