Council donates to fire appeal

The Council of the City of Perth will donate $10,000 to the Lord Mayor's Distress Relief Fund (LMDRF) to help victims of the Margaret River bushfire.
The donation will boost the appeal total, which stood at $754,991.40 at close of business on Tuesday.
Deputy Lord Mayor Janet Davidson said that regardless of its title, the Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund was established to help people suffering hardship as a result of natural disasters anywhere in the State.
“Most city dwellers have some affinity with Margaret River and feel for those who have been affected by the fire,” she said.
“The Council appreciates what some people must be going through in our South-West, especially when the weather is as variable as it has been of late. On behalf of ratepayers, the Council has agreed to donate $10,000.
“The LMDRF Board is working with the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River to determine how money raised can best be allocated and the City of Perth also offers any support it can to the Shire.”
Deputy Lord Mayor Davidson also commended the city’s business sector for responding to the appeal.
“For instance, the staff at Fortescue Metals have raised an astounding $89,000. If other businesses could raise a fraction of that amount it would really keep the appeal ticking over,” she said.
