Winter in the City of Perth has never been cooler! Whether you’re a parent looking to fill the days with exciting outings or a grandparent planning a special day with the grandkids, there’s something for everyone in the City these school holidays.
The City of Perth Library is a welcoming place to begin (especially now renovations are complete!), littlies are invited to get creative with a range of craft activities on level 4. Budding storytellers can join award-winning author Raewyn Caisley for a morning of creative writing, or snuggle up under the magical Tree of Knowledge for the beloved after-dark storytime.
Aspiring artists will love drawing characters with bestselling cartoonist Gavin Aung Than for a comic book workshop, or enjoy the ancient sounds and stories of Nyoongar culture passed down through generations and experience the powerful sound of the didgeridoo with Ngalak Nidja.
Once the sun sets, Kings Park is transformed. Lightscape returns this winter, illuminated by over 20 spectacular installations from both international and local artists, each exploring the beauty and wonder of the natural world. It’s a sensory journey of light, sound and magic and it’s no wonder Lightscape has quickly become the City’s unmissable winter tradition.
Back in the cultural heart of the city, the world-exclusive new exhibition Terracotta Warriors: Legacy of the First Emperor invites visitors into the ancient world of China’s first emperor. During the holidays, WA Museum Boola Bardip is also hosting the Ancient China Activity Zone, where families can engage with Chinese history through hands-on activities that are both fun and educational. Do not miss this unique opportunity to see a true wonder of the world!
Or if your kids are more into prehistoric adventures, there’s excitement waiting on Beaufort Street with Dinos Alive - an immersive experience that lets visitors walk among life-sized dinosaurs. With high-tech reconstructions and vivid scenic design, it brings the ancient world to life.
For families looking for an all-in-one day of entertainment, the School’s Out Winter Fest at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre (PCEC) delivers on every front. From morning until early evening, the venue comes alive with ice-skating, carnival rides, snow slides, sideshow games, and sweet winter treats.
And when the younger ones head home, the fun doesn’t stop. On Saturday nights PCEC reopens for Winter Fest Nights. This after-dark edition has a slightly edgier vibe, perfect for families with tweens and teens. With music, lights and a lively atmosphere, it’s a brilliant way to enjoy the City after hours.
So, whether you're after quiet indoor activities, hands-on cultural exploration, or winter wonderland fun, the City has school holidays sorted! And don’t forget to download the Perth Trails app to uncover fun facts and hidden stories about the city as you explore!
