On Sunday 17 February, William Street in Northbridge will come alive for the Lunar New Year Lantern Festival from 4pm – 9pm. The event is a partnership between the City of Perth, City of Vincent and Northbridge Common Town Team to highlight the end of Lunar New Year celebrations.

Colourful red lanterns will decorate William Street between Roe Street and Brisbane Street while local traders offer specials and celebrate with decorations.

A street party will take place on the corner of Newcastle street for all ages to enjoy, featuring great food, roving entertainment and activities for kids.

The event runs across local government lines with celebrations from the Roe Street end of William Street, all the way through Newcastle Street end and beyond into the City of Vincent.

“William Street connects the Cities of Perth and Vincent, and is heartland for the local town team, Northbridge Common. We’ve banded together in a joint celebration for Lunar New Year, to create a bigger and brighter event to support local businesses and welcome more visitors at this exciting time of year,” City of Vincent Mayor Emma Cole said.

“The Lantern Festival is about celebrating our strong and vibrant multicultural community as we welcome the Year of the Pig. William Street is a mix of fantastic eateries, cool and edgy bars and diverse specialty stores, so there will be a great atmosphere to enjoy.”

City of Perth Deputy Chair Commissioner Gaye McMath said the City of Perth was proud to be part of the Lunar New Year Lantern Festival alongside the City of Vincent, local businesses and community groups.

“It is extremely important for the City to support a diverse range of events reflecting our multicultural community, and this festival is going to be fantastic fun for the entire family,” she said.

“We wish everyone happiness and prosperity for the Year of the Pig.”
