Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) is coming

We're introducing a new three-bin waste collection system to help reduce landfill and improve recycling across our community. By May 2026, all single-dwelling residential properties will transition to the new Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) service.

As part of the new system, you'll have:

  • A FOGO (lime green lid) bin for food scraps and garden waste (collected weekly)
  • A Recycling (yellow lid) bin (collected fortnightly)
  • A General Waste (red lid) bin (collected fortnightly, alternating with Recycling)

Your kitchen caddy, compostable liners and information pack will be delivered before the new service begins to help you get started. If you don't currently have a lime green lid bin, one will be provided.

Collection schedule

This schedule will create a consistent waste collection service across the City. Full collection calendars and further details will be shared closer to the rollout.

We understand this change may take some getting used to, and we're here to help every step of the way. The City will provide guidance, resources and support to ensure an easy transition to the new system.

By adopting FOGO, the City of Perth is helping achieve the State Government's target for all local governments to introduce FOGO services - a key step toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.

As we approach the transition to the FOGO system, additional information will be updated on this page. If you want to receive monthly updates via the Resident newsletter, sign up here.

FAQs

  • What is FOGO?
Food Organics Garden Organics, also known as FOGO, is part of the 3-bin kerbside bin collection system that provides a lime green lid bin for food and garden material. The system keeps organic material out of landfill and turns waste into a product that can be used to enrich soil.
  • Why FOGO?
FOGO is a State Government initiative as outlined in the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030. The Strategy outlines that FOGO sets a pathway forward toward a circular economy, prioritising the separation and recovery of organic materials. Keeping organics out of landfill via the FOGO bin supports this goal.
  • What can go in the FOGO bin?

You can put all food and garden organics in your FOGO bin. Use the Council-supplied certified compostable liners to help separate kitchen waste.

    • Meat, fish, bones and seafood shells
    • Fruit and vegetable scraps
    • Bread, cereal, pasta, grains
    • Grass clippings, weeds, leaves, flowers and small garden cuttings
  • What's included in the caddy pack?
The kitchen caddy and its contents are designed to help you separate your organic waste. Inside the kitchen caddy, you will find certified compostable liners and information to help you be informed about the new system and your bin schedule.
