As part of the City’s analysis of future demands on the network concerns were raised by local stakeholders about pedestrian safety at the intersection of Spring and Mount streets in the CBD.
Foot traffic at the location is set to increase significantly with the completion of the new Mia Yellagonga (Woodside Campus) building, which will accommodate more than 3,500 employees and visitors.
Chair Commissioner Eric Lumsden said further concept design work identified that the installation of a pedestrian crossing by itself might not achieve the required safety outcomes.
“The approach will also be redesigned to reduce driver speed and improve sight lines, build out kerbs and upgrade drainage,” he said.
Woodside CEO Peter Coleman welcomed the pedestrian safety improvements, which are timely given the impending opening of the company’s new Perth headquarters.
“Safety is at the heart of everything we do at Woodside, for our own staff, contractors and partners, but also for the communities in which we operate.
“The City of Perth’s work adding the new pedestrian crossing and redesigning the approaches to the area will make it safer and more accessible for everyone,” he said.
The works are due to be completed by the end of 2018.
