Message from the Lord Mayor: Perth City Deal A Game Changer for Perth

I also had the chance to discuss the ground breaking Perth City Deal with Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts Paul Fletcher and State Minister for Transport, Planning and Ports Rita Saffioti. 

The projects include:

 

EDITH COWAN PERTH CAMPUS

The headline act is the ECU Perth Campus which will deliver an increase to the daily City population of 10,000 people by the end of 2025.  More people means more activity, more vibrancy, more action – right in the heart of our City. This is a gamechanger. You can see how it will develop here: 

 

ROE STREET ENHANCEMENT

At last, the facelift Roe Street needs. The $22 million Roe Street Enhancement Project will transform Roe Street from a car dominant corridor to a vibrant city destination, improving connectivity and transport options between Northbridge and the CBD.

It will deliver wider footpaths for pedestrians, alfresco dining, new trees to provide shade, urban cooling and greenery and new street lighting and CCTV to improve public safety. There’ll also be new paving, street furniture and free public Wi-Fi. Here’s what to expect:  

CAUSEWAY PEDESTRIAN AND CYCLIST BRIDGE

Safety for cyclists and pedestrians is the focus of this new $100 million bridge to be built approximately 90 metres downstream of the existing Causeway Bridge.  It will be six metres wide and have dedicated pedestrian and cyclist lanes, connecting the Victoria Park foreshore with Heirisson Island and Perth’s CBD.

PERTH CONCERT HALL

The home of live performance in our City is finally getting the makeover it deserves. The Perth Concert Hall will be restored and elevated to a world class performance space. Last week architects were appointed for the $52.4 million redevelopment of this iconic building.

And as part of the redevelopment, the City of Perth has contributed $4 million dollars to build a permanent home for our world class West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO). 

WACA REFRESH

And as we celebrate the relaunch of Perth – City of Light, it was my great pleasure to be at the WACA this week to help announce the LED coloured lights upgrade which will allow the iconic light towers to light up like Optus Stadium, the Matagarup Bridge and Council House. 

In addition, the City of Perth has committed to a one off capital payment of $25 million towards the construction of the WACA aquatic facility.  In all, that’s a $43 million dollar contribution towards the $1.7 billion Perth City Deal.  It represents outstanding value for our City across a raft of once-in-a generation projects which will truly transform and inject vitality, ambiance and confidence to our City.
