The City of Perth Council met on Tuesday 29 April. The following decisions were made:
E-scooter Share Scheme to continue
Council last night approved the continuation of E-scooter Share Scheme (ESS) within the City, and for the City to undertake a new public tender process.
This follows a successful trial period for the E-scooter Share Scheme which commenced in March 2023 and continues through to July 2025.
The continuation of the ESS was informed by public consultation in February 2024 and January 2025, as well as outcomes from the trial which have delivered flow-on benefits to tourism and sustainability, by providing greater mobility choice and connectivity across the City, as well as with adjacent Local Government areas.
Over the course of the trial, a total of 689,422 rides have been taken over a total travel distance of 1,273,520km, delivering an estimated saving of 126 tonnes in Co2 emissions.
Riders average 1.9km per ride, supporting local businesses by making it easier for visitors and residents to get to different precincts in the City.
All go on FOGO
Council endorsed the transition to a three-bin FOGO service for single unit dwellings by 30 June 2026.
This decision is in line with the State Government’s Waste Strategy which has a FOGO adoption deadline for Perth and Peel local governments of the same date. It will support the City in achieving the waste reduction target in the City’s Strategic Community Plan 2022-2032.
The City has worked with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, and other local governments and industry stakeholders to ensure the City’s transition to FOGO services is supported by best practices and funding requirements. This project is supported by the Government of Western Australia and the Waste Authority.
The transition will be proceeded by a period of waste education to inform and educate residents about the benefits of the transition, including diverting organic material from landfill sites, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by processing the organic material, and supporting circular economy principals.
Following the rollout of FOGO to single unit dwellings, the City will work on ways to support residents living in multi unit developments who wish to transition to FOGO services.
Sustainability Strategy 2022-2032 updated
The reviewed Sustainability Strategy 2022-2032 was endorsed by Council.
The Strategy, originally endorsed by Council at its 26 April 2022 Ordinary Council Meeting, contained an initiative to review the Strategy in 2025.
The review focused on providing a guiding framework for the City’s sustainability strategic pillar and ensuring strong strategic alignment between strategy themes and the operational levels of the organisation.
The updates bring improved metrics and measures to support strategic direction on sustainability across all service units.
