Supporting local groups to deliver projects addressing a diverse range of community needs, the Community Enhancement Grants offer up to $15,000 per program proven to deliver sustainable outcomes.
Chair Commissioner Andrew Hammond said the approved community programs worked to improve social and mental well-being and addressed key issues at a local level to make the City a better place in which to live, work and visit.
“The City of Perth supports community programs which facilitate opportunities for individuals to connect with their community and provide opportunities for people to engage in health and well-being activities,” he said.
“In this second round of Community Enhancement Grants, the City has supported a range of programs that will provide the utmost benefit for City residents, workers and visitors.
“Participants in the programs range from school-aged children to seniors, ensuring wide-ranging benefits and outcomes within different parts of the community. We are confident the supported projects have the potential for long-term growth and sustainability beyond the life of the grant.”
Community Enhancement Grants recipient The Underground Collaborative Founder Katie Liew said funds from the City of Perth would make an incredible difference to the services they deliver.
“As an emerging local grassroots social enterprise, it means a lot to have some financial assistance to achieve our vision in breaking the cycles of homelessness,” she said.
“These funds will make an incredible difference and allow us to train and employ people experiencing or at risk of homelessness to become baristas at our first employment initiative Ground+Co; providing supportive pathways for transition into long term employment and most importantly, stable housing.”
The approved programs include the below:
• The Underground Collaborative for Ground+Co Café ($11,596)
Ground+Co Cafe is an employment initiative by Underground Collaborative which will train and employ people experiencing or at-risk of homelessness to become baristas.
• Volunteering WA for Perth School Vollieday Program ($13,000)
The Perth School Vollieday Program will offer young people aged 13 and up the opportunity to volunteer in the Perth community.
• Western Australia Youth Theatre Company for Open Access Performance Classes ($14,000)
WAYTCo are proposing the delivery of Open Access Performance Classes for young people aged 13 to 26 who would not normally participate in theatre because of various personal, physical, financial, cultural, linguistic or geographic barriers.
• ConnectGroups WA for Hand to Heart ($13,000)
Hand to Heart coordinates volunteers to make up to five visits to an isolated senior in their home to discuss their needs and to identify what services and community groups can address the barriers contributing to their isolation.
• Perth City Farm for Kids in the Garden ($4500)
Perth City Farm will establish the Kids in the Garden program for school aged children. The project will teach children aspects of organic food gardening, with a strong emphasis on sustainable living.
Community Enhancement Grants may be used to assist the development and facilitation of a new community program, expand on an existing program or for other innovative and creative projects that demonstrate clear community need.
