James Street revitalisation
Council has endorsed the James Street Revitalisation Final Concept Plan, setting a clear direction for the future renewal of one of Northbridge’s most important public streets.
James Street is a key cultural, hospitality and entertainment corridor connecting Russell Square, Northbridge Piazza and the Perth Cultural Centre. The project aims to create a greener, safer and more people-focused street that better supports local business, everyday use and major events.
The endorsed Final Concept Plan reflects extensive community and stakeholder engagement and responds directly to the priorities raised during community consultation, including improved safety and lighting, increased urban greening, wider footpaths, public art and a higher-quality public realm.
Key elements of the endorsed plan include increased tree planting and greening opportunities, wider and footpaths, a full functional and feature lighting upgrade to improve safety and night-time amenity, upgraded paving and street furniture, public art opportunities and event-ready infrastructure to support temporary street closures and major events.
Public engagement on the Draft Concept Plan attracted more than 2,800 visits and 264 completed survey responses, with 83 per cent of respondents agreeing or strongly agreeing with the project direction.
The project will now progress into detailed design, with construction anticipated from 2028 onwards in line with the City’s Long Term Financial Plan. The estimated project cost is approximately $22.8 million (ex GST).
